WNEP Resumes Analog Broadcasting

On Wednesday, February 18, 2009, WNEP President and General Manager Chuck Morgan announced that WNEP has chosen to resume broadcasting on its analog channel until further notice.

According to Morgan, the Federal Communications Commission made an urgent request to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton television stations. The FCC was concerned with the lack of analog signals and was asking for cooperation and help. "Even though this comes as an expense to us, we believe we have a responsibility to act in the public interest and continue to provide news, weather, and emergency information to our viewers who were not ready for the transition."

Viewers who found themselves without access to any local television are urged to take immediate action to make the switch to digital. This may require the purchase and installation of a converter box.

WNEP-TV is the local ABC affiliate for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton market and is Proud to Serve all of Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. It is owned and operated by Local TV Holdings LLC.

How to get WNEP's digital signal over the air.

When WNEP's analog signal goes off the air, you will not be able to see us if you use "rabbit ears" or an antenna. If you do not have access to, or do not wish to pay for cable or satellite service, here is what you will need to receive WNEP's existing digital signal over the air.
  • You can buy a digital TV converter (that looks a lot like a cable box) and connect it to your current TV.
  • You can subscribe to cable or satellite TV. They will convert the signal for you.
  • You can buy a new TV that can pick up the new digital signal (basically a TV with the digital TV box built in).
Frequently Asked Questions:

If I currently use an antenna (rooftop or rabbit ears') will I have to buy a new digital antenna.

There is no such thing as a digital antenna'. Any television antenna will pick up digital signals. However because the digital signals are sent from different transmitters, the signal itself may be stronger or weaker where you live. If it is too weak, you may need to upgrade to a larger antenna to get the signal. If you currently use an antenna, click here for more information

I bought a new TV about three years ago. Do I still need a digital box?

As of May 25, 2007, all new TVs sold in the US must have a digital tuner or be clearly labeled as not having one. Larger TVs had this requirement earlier. Check your manual to see if your TV has a digital tuner. Look for these words: "Digital Tuner," "Digital Receiver," "DTV," "ATSC," or "HDTV".

However if it says "Digital Monitor", "HDTV Monitor," "Digital Ready," or "HDTV Ready," it probably will require a separate tuner.
