A jeweler wants to brighten the Mother's Day of those who are having tough times. The place in Lackawanna County is giving some special gifts to families dealing with unemployment or home foreclosure.

George and Company Diamond Jewelers in Dickson City is offering free "mother and child" charm necklaces or sterling silver earrings. They are valued up to $99 each, but at this jeweler they're free for those who lost their job or home.

"The community has done a lot for us during the years and we wanted to give something back," said owner Kim Duffy.

Duffy said the jeweler has seen so many mothers recently selling their jewelry to make ends meet.

"Unfortunately it's a very common thing," she added. "We have them coming in all the time they're selling heirlooms, their grandmother's pieces just so they can feed their kids. "

"Mother's Day is a special day and I think this is very nice that they're doing this for mothers who are unemployed," said Marie Ferguson of Dickson City.

Ferguson lost her job. She's so grateful she says she will come back when better times return.

"I think it's wonderful that they're doing something during these tough times and I think I would come back here and buy jewelry because they did this," Ferguson added.

To get one of the 100 gifts available, customers have to bring paperwork proving a job loss or home foreclosure. Moms aren't the only ones who can pick up the jewelry. Many dads who have lost their jobs are also showing up to get a gift for their wives.

"We hate to see it, but hopefully we can give them something to make them feel good," said Duffy.

The offer at the place along Main Street in Dickson City runs through Thursday.
