Those at the S.P.C.A. near Pottsville said the two dogs were found inside a home on East Pine Street in Mahanoy City on Monday. Workers have named the surviving dog Autumn.
"It makes me beyond furious," said Moyer. "There's no excuse for a dog to look like this."
They believe she's gone three weeks without food. The boxer can't stop itching either. She was discovered covered in fleas.
"We're seeing hip bones, we're seeing ribs, we're seeing millions and millions of fleas on this dog," said Hillside S.P.C.A. Assistant Manager Tricia Moyer. "The dog should never be this thin."
The landlord said he went to the house do an inspection. He said he couldn't believe when he found the one dog inside the house starving. He was even more shocked when he found the other dog dead. He said the house was filled with fleas. His tenants were nowhere to be found.
"It's totally disgusting," added Moyer. "And unfortunately we're seeing it more and more frequently. People are leaving their animals behind not worrying or caring about where they end up. "."
Those at the S.P.C.A. said their pens are getting more and more pets that were abandoned. They don't know if it's the tough economy or what, but animal lovers say there's no excuse when places like the S.P.C.A. are there to help.
"I don't agree with it, i think something should be done," said neighbor Melinda Fisher. "It's a shame. I have dogs of my own, I couldn't imagine doing that."
Tisher lives right across East Pine Street from where Autumn and the dead dog were found. She said neighbors had no idea the animals were abandoned.
"My dogs are very important to me," added Fisher. "They're treated very well and I just can't imagine just leaving them."
Experts said Autumn should be fine, once she's available for adoption and gets a good home.
