Nearly a month ago, a major fire tore through West Main Street in Bloomsburg, destroying several buildings.
Monday night, town officials thanked the police and fire fighters who got the people inside to safety.
It was an early morning blaze that broke out on West Main Street in Bloomsburg on October 25.
As flames spread to several buildings, firefighters from Bloomsburg and the surrounding communities worked to bring it under control. Twenty-seven people were forced to flee and watched as homes and businesses were destroyed.
During a council meeting in Bloomsburg Monday night, town officials, along with members of the community, reflected on not what was lost but on the lives that were saved by recognizing all those involved in the rescue efforts.
Four Bloomsburg volunteer firefighters were commended for saving a man from one of the burning buildings.
"We knew that we had some time but not a lot of time and we actually did a very quick search of the entire building and found one individual and removed them," said Lt. Jason Reynolds, one of the firefighters honored.
Bloomsburg police officers Tom Pfeiffer and Matt Golla each received the Life Saving Award.
The officers arrived on scene before firefighters and went door to door to alert sleeping residents to the fire.
Roommates and Bloomsburg University students Lisa Baier and Ashley Shick were among those the officers helped to escape.
"I don't think we would have gotten out in the amount of time that we did if it wasn't for him," said Baier.
"They got us out and I wish that I could talk to each one of them and thank them individually," said Shick.
"Anybody else that does the same job knows the risks, they would do the same thing, we're nothing special," said Officer Golla.
Earlier this month, a state police fire marshal ruled the fire accidental, determining the blaze started by a stove top fire in a kitchen in one of the buildings.
