A trip along Route 6 in Wyoming County just got a little smoother. A bridge that has been closed for months is now officially open again.

The closure forced a detour into Meshoppen and caused a headache or two for drivers in the area this summer.

For the past few months, a road through Meshoppen was a busy thoroughfare while crews fixed the bridge on Route 6.

"Oh yeah, this was solid traffic. They were running the main road right through here, all the traffic," said Harry Layaou of Mehoopany.

Police and PennDOT said the project to replace the bridge was completed and cleaned up Tuesday, much to the delight of Harold Welles, a truck driver who often navigated the detour.

"Traffic was a little tight getting around corners, when you got a trailer. With all the cars and stuff. Yeah, it was a little rough," Welles said.

Meshoppen's police chief said he is thrilled the project is finished. He said it really cuts down on the possibility of what could have happened there.

"This is an accident waiting to happen, and it's gonna happen," said police chief John Krieg in June when the project first began. He had issued a number of citations to drivers who weren't paying attention and drove right up to the Road Closed sign only to try and cross the then one-lane bridge the wrong way.

Now traffic is moving right along.

"I just got into town and realized it was open. That's a good deal," Welles added.

Shirley Layaou would love to see crews fix the bridge near her home in nearby Mehoopany. "We came across it. We just came across it. It's nice. I hope they get ours looking like that," Layaou added.

There is one more plus to the project being completed. A worker at a gas station said foot traffic into the store really slowed, when the traffic flow changed. She expects business to pick back up again in the days and weeks to come.
