It wasn't your typical history class Monday for some Wyoming County students.

Class was held outside for sixth graders at Tunkhannock Middle School. The children walked through the historic Tunkhannock downtown. It was a living history lesson for the students.

"You get to get out of school and you get to see all of the historical parts of Tunkhannock," said student Michael Greene.

About 250 students went on a five-mile tour, taking time to stop, take notes, and learn about the historic area.

"Learning more about Tunkhannock and the history behind it and I want to live in some of the houses that we've gone to because they are so old and look so nice," said student Christine Rossi.

The goal is to teach children about the area's rich history and heritage by traveling through the borough.

"To know that even though we are a small town, we have a historical background. They can actually learn that and be proud of where they actually come from," said teacher Sara Ergott.

This is the second year the school held this program. The students' next assignment is to create a travel brochure highlighting all they learned during their tour of Tunkhannock borough.
