A project has closed part of busy Route 6 in Wyoming County but some drivers aren't paying any attention to the signs that say "Road Closed."
Police and PennDOT said drivers just aren't paying attention at the construction site in Meshoppen. They are pulling up to the bridge along Route 6 surprised seeing the westbound lane is closed after they were warned to take a detour.
Drivers heading into Meshoppen pass sign after sign saying the westbound lane is closed, but many of them keep going straight through.
"There's warnings from the top of the mountain all the way down. There's lighted signs that are flashing to get their attention, other signs and they just keep going through, they're not even seeing the signs," said Meshoppen Police Chief John Krieg.
Car after car could be seen passing the detour signs and then pulling up to the "Road Closed" sign, wondering what was going on.
Police said that's not the big problem. Some drivers see the road is closed and try to cross the one way, one-lane bridge in the wrong direction.
"Tractor trailers and cars going across the bridge even though it's closed," said a clerk at a nearby gas station. "They're going the wrong way!"
Workers at the gas station have been amazed watching drivers completely ignore the signs.
"It has been nuts. Monday and Tuesday were pretty crazy but traffic is pretty light today so it hasn't been bad," the clerk added.
"Signs right there say "Do Not Enter" and "Road Closed" and they're just not paying attention to it," the chief said.
He added he has issued a bunch of citations but worries about bigger problems since the construction is planned for months.
"This is an accident waiting to happen and it's going to happen," said Chief Krieg, Unless, he added, drivers pay more attention.
