The chilly weather and threat of snow has some people turning on the heat. One business has been busy making sure furnaces are up and running.

"We're going through that and checking filters, making sure the operation of the other units are all working," said Wayne Pisanchyn.

With temperatures below normal he has been busy fixing furnaces like those at Summit Baptist Bible Church near Clarks Summit.

"The day started very cool and we began to notice after a very short time things were getting chilly in the office, so we gave him a call right away, knowing it's the start of the cold season, we need our furnaces checked," said Pastor Mark Schmitz.

Pisanchyn owns a plumbing and heating company in Lackawanna County and said now is the time to make sure your heating unit is ready for winter.

"When the leaves start falling, that should be your cue that you need to starting thinking about checking your furnace," Pisanchyn said.

He added insects can sometimes get caught and need to be removed from furnaces.

Filters should to be cleaned or replaced.

Some other things to check for? "We're looking for corrosion, rust, a build-up of anything that's not normally there," the heating expert explained.

Pisanchyn said as long as there are no major problems, having your furnace serviced can cost around $100 to $200, depending on the type.

Pastor Schmitz said it's money well spent.

"It's definitely worth it because when you think about it, it's efficiency. We're going to use less fuel. It's safety and it's very important for folks when they come to church to feel comfortable and warm," said Pastor Schmitz.

For homeowners looking to save money this winter Pisanchyn recommends programable digital thermostats that turn down the heat, when it's not needed.
