A girl hit by a sport utility vehicle in Snyder County is recovering. She was run over on Saturday after falling off her bike.
The Carney's said they moved to Selinsgrove nearly two weeks ago. Their youngest daughter, Topanga, just made a new friend and went bike riding on a rainy Saturday evening when things went terribly wrong.
Topanga Carney, 10, is now recovering at Geisinger Medical Center. "I would probably be dead. I'm lucky it was just my leg," the girl said.
Topanga said on Saturday evening, she was riding a bike with her brother and a friend on Monroe Street in Selinsgrove. Topanga said the roads were slick. She lost control of the bike, slipped and fell in front of the vehicle.
Her mother, Nettie Carney, said she heard it all from their house just two blocks away.
"I heard Topanga scream. I come off the couch because I was talking with her older brother, got to the door and my younger son was hollering, 'Topanga got hit!'" Nettie Carney recounted.
Topanga's femur in her right leg was broken She was rushed to Geisinger Medical Center and had surgery on Sunday.
"My bone is cracked right in half. They had to put metal polls inside of my knee. They are helping me to walk now," Topanga said.
Those rods will stay in her leg for about a year. Nettie Carney said she has a long journey to recovery but doesn't blame the driver for the crash.
"It's going to be a long road but I want everyone to realize the lady that accidentally ran over her, it was not her fault. It was just a freak of nature accident," Carney added.
"I would say sorry because it probably my fault. I should have looked before I went," said Topanga said.
She will leave the hospital Tuesday and is expected to make a full recovery.
State police said the driver involved in the crash will not be charged.
