Home invasion charges against some students from a college in our area have been dropped, according to college officials, but the decision to expel them still stands.
The five Lackawanna College football players were dismissed from school just over a week ago after a home invasion in the city.
While their names have been cleared in the courts, they have not been cleared at their college.
Lackawanna College President Raymond Angeli said even though the charges against the students have been dropped they are still expelled because they violated the student code of conduct.
"Our decision to expel the students in final. Whatever happened in the courts happened in the courts. Their actions put a bad light on the college," Angeli said.
Steffen Colon, Ascare Douglas, Jaren Elder, Jacob Free and Laquan James were arrested.
Scranton police said the men broke into an apartment building on West Market Street and admitted to holding several people there against their will, including a four-year-old child, all over drug money.
The five students were kicked off the football team and expelled from Lackawanna College two days later.
Even before the charges were dropped college officials said the students appealed the decision right away and the decision to dismiss them was upheld.
Angeli said there is a board of trustees meeting at the college this Thursday, but the decision to dismiss the students is final.
According to a lawyer for four of the students, charges were dropped because a witness made up a story.
