Knowles Defeats Mackey in Special Election
A special election in the 124th Legislative District has filled a seat vacated by Dave Argall.

Republican Jerry Knowles defeated Democratic challenger Bill Mackey. Both were hopeing to capture the seat left vacant when Argall won a special election to fill the late Senator Jim Rhoades. Rhoades died in a car crash in October, 2008.

Knowles was chief Argall's chief aide in House.

"Everyone worked very hard. It was a compressed campaign. It was about two months. It was a hard-fought campaign. The balance here and the organization were the whole key. I mean hard work, the plan and the volunteers and that's the whole key to this win," Knowles said.

His opponent, Democrat Mackey was less than enthusiastic with voter turnout at the polls.

"Voter turnout is important. I think it's a shame that people are kind of apathetic and won't come out to vote, even in the primary," Mackey said.

Knowles will serve out the remainder of Argall's term.
