It's moving day for an animal shelter in chuylkill County. Officials believe they can offer better services for abandoned and abused animals and the people who adopt them.
At the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA near Minersville a lot has been accumulated over the past 13 years. That means a lot to pack and move.
Besides paperwork and supplies the animals must be moved too, including a lot of dogs.
"We did not own the property up there and we're starting to outgrow it and it was getting run down and we needed a fresh start. This came available and we jumped on it," said Kim Pribilla of the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA.
The entire SPCA operation is being moved to a former kennel near Pine Grove. It was all possible though a bank loan. The purchase price was $225,000 for the five-acre complex.
"We have so much more space for the dogs to run and play," Pribilla said.
Besides more space for the animals, a house came as part of the deal. It could be a money maker because it can be rented out.
The finishing touches are part of the move. Most of the work is being done by volunteers.
"A lot of work has gone into it. It looks a lot better. We got told by the state that it's one of the better looking ones in the state," said volunteer John Altemos.
"I received a dog from the SPCA in Atlantic City and I really got experience with it and I admire what they do with the animals that other people neglect to take care of so I figure I'd pitch in and help out," said volunteer John Wampole.
The move should be completed on the weekend.
Officials are asking for any kind of donations to help their cause, caring for the neglected, the abused and the unwanted. To help call the shelter at 570-544-2920.
