An election day tradition involving food, hard work, and some hungry people is alive and well in Schuylkill County.

They're serving up pork, potatoes and sauerkraut in Pine Grove.

"This is one way. We have a good thing going and they come in to see us," said Merlin Jones of the Pine Grove Masonic Lodge.

The Masonic Lodge number 409 hosts the event. The goal is to feed hungry voters and election workers.

"Rather than us bring our lunch, we decided to come down here," said election worker Mary Alice Brennan.

"The food is very good and everything and it's just nice," said election worker Mary Kahl.

There is a fee for the all you can eat feast. The money raised goes to a long list of community causes.

"We're going to feed the needy here a Thanksgiving meal sometime this month. We have a scholarship fund where we hand out scholarships," said Don Schneck of the Pine Grove Masonic Lodge.

"You get to meet a lot of people, get to talk to a lot of people and a majority of people appreciate what you do," said lodge member Dennis Auntst.

Such an event takes a lot of food and volunteers.

"We probably went through a pig and a half that we roasted and picked the meat off the bone. We made the sauerkraut yesterday and the potatoes we peeled on Sunday," said Dale Fidler.

Some of the work is time consuming. Owen Brommer had the job of peeling hundreds of potatoes. "This is not my normal occupation, I'll tell you that!"

Those at the Pine Grove Masonic Lodge don't know how the pork and sauerkraut election day tradition started but promise to keep it going.
