Some say it's profitable for the mall and a good move for the church.
Volunteers are turning what used to be a store in the Schuylkill mall, near Frackville, into a youth center.
"It's just what I need to do for the Lord, really. That's where He is calling me right now to get involved with this and get the youth involved," said Tim Yhelka of Tamaqua.
The youth center will be run by the Four Square Gospel Church and Pastor Todd Dewire.
"We're going to bring in some live music, hard rock and roll bands. That's what will attract them and get them out of the mall and get them to come in and listen to some good music," Pastor Dewire said.
There are usually a lot of people in the mall on Fridays and over the weekend. A lot of young people hang out there.
"They really don't have much to do. They really don't have much money and the things we plan to do are totally free. It gives them something to do. It's totally safe," said Will Solnoki of Frackville.
Turning the store into a youth center takes a lot work. It involves building a stage and lots of sound proofing to keep the rock and roll music from spilling into the mall. It's also a way to draw a younger crowd to the Four Square Gospel Church in Frackville.
"The median age in our church is 65 plus,65 plus and we need some young blood and the music will do it, I believe," Pastor Dewire added.
The renovations will take several more weeks and the Four Square Gospel Church's youth center is expected to open by the end of March.
