October marks Fall car Care Month.

As temperatures drop, mechanics say, now might be the best time to make sure your ride is ready for winter.

Considering the official start of winter is still more than 60 days away it's tough to think about driving on a snowy road.

Vehicle technicians at Kost Tire and Auto in the Shavertown area said now is the perfect time to prepare.

Experts said you can check your tires using a penny.

"Right here we have a bad tire. You can see the head of Lincoln's head. Not a good tire. Right here we have a good tire. Full tread depth. (You) can't see his head," said Erwin Kost Jr. of Kost Tire and Auto.

Another biggie is the radiator. Make sure you have enough anti-freeze. Not having enough could cause your cooling system to freeze up and that could cost hundreds to fix.

"People overlook windshield wiper blades. When they start to crack, fall apart (it's) time to get replaced," said David Barnes.

To make sure you're not left in the cold get a good glance at what really gets your car going; the battery.

"Corrosion around the battery terminal. Some might have indicators when it might be going bad," explained Jon Dore of Kost.

If you don't feel comfortable doing some of the checks your vehicle to a garage because most places will give it a glance for free, check out the problem and then tell you what you might need.
