First graders and high schoolers joined hands in Pike County Monday to show their respect for Veterans of the Armed Forces. A memorial of 200 American flags was erected on the grounds of Wallenpaupack Area High School along Route 6.

"We're just demonstrating that Wallenpaupack as a school, and as a community can honor our Veterans. And we thought this was a great way," said student council president Ashley Wallace.

"We're here to celebrate the soldiers because it's Veterans Day and they would like us to help them and put up flags for them," said first grader Kelsey Matsen.

The memorial was a group effort, with the math department mapping out the placement and shop teacher Dd Wargo and his students helping to build and erect the flag poles for maximum strength. One of Wargo's students, Patrick Eldred, said his classmates tested the stands in the winds along Lake Wallenpaupack.

For a donation members of the community can get yellow ribbons affixed to the flags as well as a message to a service member. The student council funded the project, with the flags being donated by area businesses.

The memorial will be on display through the rest of this week. On Veterans Day, the school is holding a gathering to honor the veterans. Over 2,000 people are expected to attend that event in Pike County.
