County leaders in Lackawanna County cut the ribbon Tuesday on a new and improved Aylesworth Park in Archbald.
It was a little chilly for a picnic in Archbald, but the park's brand new pavilion was dedicated anyway.
"I think it's going to get a lot of use. I think the people of Archbald and Jermyn finally have something to come up here and enjoy," said Jermyn Borough Council Vice President Katie Hosie.
Construction for the pavilion, garage and park office started in the spring. The project had a price tag of about $500,000 and was paid for by grants.
"I think it's going to add a lot of recreational opportunity for people in the Mid-Valley that they may have had to drive farther for in the past," said Deputy Director for Parks and Recreation Bill Davis.
People who live in Archbald and Jermyn said they are so excited to see the transformation of the park they use all summer long.
"We just love this spot," said Mary Perault of Jermyn, "and we enjoy it. It's just a little jewel for the community."
An office and garage are connected to the pavilion. "Prior to this building, we had no facilities on site. This will give us a means to better maintain and provide security for the park itself," Davis added.
County officials said there are more improvements to come for Aylesworth Park. On the other side of the parking lot sits the future site of a volleyball court, softball field and multi-purpose field. Officials expect to bid out the next phase of construction in January, and begin construction in the spring.
