More information is coming to light about the man killed Tuesday when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle.

Police said Robert Apuzzi, 49, from Tobyhanna, was hit and killed Tuesday afternoon. People who live and work along busy Route 196 near Mount Pocono said they can't believe their friend is gone.

"He knows everybody on this road, everybody knows bob," said Natalie Rogers from Tobyhanna. "He was a nice guy."

Police said Apuzzi was killed when an SUV driven by Lisamarie Ostuni, 43, from Tobyhanna drifted from the road. Neighbors said he lived behind his business on Route 196, called Bob's Auto Repair, which has been in operation since 1990.

Customer Leighton Chin stopped by to pay his condolences, after hearing about the crash. "He was a hard-working man, if your car broke down and you needed it fixed, he would fix it for you," said Chin.

Police said the SUV was heading southbound on Route 196 and hit Apuzzi as he was trimming weeds near the edge of his property, near the road.

Wayne Van Pelt owns a landscaping business down the street from Apuzzi's garage and said he saw him working just before he was killed.

"He was weed-wacking on his property. I beeped, he gave me a little wave. I went up to the insurance company and about 15 minutes later the road was closed," said Van Pelt. He added Apuzzi's passion was fixing antique cars. "He was up and down here. He has his motorcycle. He'd go in the morning and go get coffee or he'd use one of his old trucks, and he had some old cars."

Route 196 was closed for hours while the crash was investigated. Police have not released what caused the vehicle to leave the road. The driver was taken to the hospital for drug tests. Those results won't be back until next week. Police said no charges have been filed at this time.
