Guilty of first and third degree murder. That's the verdict handed down in a double murder trial in Monroe County.
A jury found Jason Koehler guilty of murder for the shooting deaths of a man and a woman near Kresgeville in 2004.
Now the convicted killer is facing the death penalty.
Koehler, 26, was silent walking into Monroe County court awaiting the jury's decision. Around noon Koehler heard his fate.
A jury found Koehler guilty of first-degree murder for killing Jennifer Cullinan, third-degree murder for the death of Jason Gray and attempted murder for shooting Jose Joubert.
Koehler was on trial for the shootings at a home near Kresgeville in 2004.
During closing arguments Koehler's attorney told jurors his client acted in self defense and that one of the victims pulled a gun on Koehler the night of the shooting and Koehler was simply defending himself.
The prosecution, however, called the shooting a planned robbery and execution.
Prosecutors told jurors Tuesday Koehler came to the house with a loaded gun, shot three people in the head, then threw them in the basement after robbing them.
One of the victim's family wept when they heard the verdict come down.
Now guilty of murder in the first degree, Koehler is facing the death penalty in Monroe County.
That is a sentence he avoided in 2006 after he initially pleaded guilty to the crimes and was sentenced by a judge to 40 to 80 years on prison.
Koehler later appealed and was a granted a new trial.
Now his fate lies in the hands of the jury who will decide he will be sentenced to death or life in prison.
Jurors are set to return to court Thursday morning to begin the sentencing phrase of the trial.
