With the tough economy the United Way of Monroe County is trying something new to raise donation dollars.
"With the economic times it has been a struggle. Some of the campaigns that are coming in are a little bit lower that what we have seen in the past," said campaign co-chair Jamie Keener.
To turn that around, officials unveiled a billboard just off Route 209 near Marshalls Creek along with a new incentive program. It's called "Give Ten." The idea is if you give a $10 donation to United Way on its website, then tell ten friends, you are entered for a chance to win $100 or other prizes.
The billboard space was donated by a local advertising company in Monroe County and representatives for that company said the location should generate a lot of exposure.
"This particular site on Route 209 near Marshalls Creek is a huge traffic area for us. These signs specifically have been very successful for us over the last number of years," said Marc Rimland of Adams Outdoor Marketing.
Dennis Jeter of Stroudsburg-based "A Sound Strategy" donated his time to make the United Way's website and said donations might be down but the trend of e-giving is up.
"Non profit organizations, especially the United Way, need to become more creative in how they raise money and e-giving is one of those ways," said Jeter.
Officials said the United Way of Monroe County billboard campaign will stay up through January.
