Hundreds of students are affected by the changes in a school district in Monroe County.

A leaky water pipe at J.T. Lambert Intermediate School in the East Stroudsburg Area School District is sending kids to other schools.

The superintendent of East Stroudsburg Area schools said a plan is in place to try to make the educational experience as normal as possible for the hundreds of sixth graders in the district.

A water pipe burst early Sunday morning at Lambert Intermediate. The leaking water damaged two floors and 30 classrooms. Classes were canceled for the week.

Sixth grade students will be bused to two other elementary schools in the district while the cleanup continues.

Parents showed up at a meeting to hear the details of the plan from the superintendent.

"They are with their own teachers. Some of the students are going back to their own elementary schools, so they are pretty excited by that," said Superintendent Sharon Laverdure. The day will be as normal as it possibly can be in a new environment."

On Monday, more than 300 sixth grade students will arrive at J.T. Lambert. Shuttle buses will take nearly 250 of them to Smithfield Elementary near Shawnee. The rest will go to J.M. Hill Elementary in East Stroudsburg. Once there, students will be taught in classrooms by their regular teachers. In the afternoon, students will again board buses to return to J.T. Lambert.

"They won't be missing less education. They've covered every point we've asked. I was hoping there would be more people tonight to hear the information," said parent David Flint.

One student said he doesn't mind the new setting. "I think this will be a big change and I think I'll enjoy it."

There is no word on when the students will be able to return to school full-time at J.T. Lambert Intermediate.

The superintendent said there is still a lot of cleaning up to do and it may take weeks.
