State representatives in Monroe County are taking action after three people died on a stretch of busy highway going into Stroudsburg.

Representatives Mario Scavello and John Siptroth are pushing the state police and PennDOT to keep the road safe.

Both state representatives are doing what they can to prevent another deadly crash on Routes 33 and 209 by asking PennDOT and the state police to do their part.

In the past two weeks, three people have died in separate crashes on a busy section of Monroe County highway.

The first happened on June 24 at the intersection of Route 209 and Schoolhouse Road.

Police said a tractor trailer didn't stop in time and caused a chain reaction crash involving five cars. One woman died. The driver of the big rig is facing vehicular homicide charges.

The next day there was another deadly collision miles away on Route 33 north, near the Saylorsburg exit.

Police said a woman was killed when her vehicle crossed the center line and struck two other cars.

The most recent incident was Monday on Route 33 north.

State police said a 21-year-old man from Scranton was killed when a tractor-trailer crossed the median and hit the man's car head on.

A van was also involved and 12 people were injured.

A PennDOT spokesperson said there are no current traffic safety studies planned in response to the deadly wrecks.

They have been putting up a guide rail in the median on Route 33 to prevent crossovers, a project that had been going on before the deadly crashes.

"Most of the accidents that happen out there were people crossing the two lanes," said Representative Scavello. "That divider will save a tremendous amount of lives, I believe."

The PennDOT spokesperson said driver behavior is a big factor in crashes and that is why Scavello has asked state police to boost their presence.

"You're going to see a tremendous police presence. They're going to pull trucks over and check brakes on that stretch of road. It's something we have to do," Scavello added.

State police in Swiftwater handled all three deadly crashes. The patrol sergeant said they are gladly answering Scavello's call to action.

"As of today, increased patrol presence on Route 33 and Business Route 209 in Hamilton and Stroud township area," said Sergeant Jason Reznick with the Pennsylvania State Police.

State Representative John Siptroth also covers part of the section of Monroe County that has been the scene of the wrecks. He said he is encouraging PennDOT to work more quickly in putting the guide rails up on Route 33.
