Across the area and across the country, U.S. veterans and military personnel were recognized on Veterans Day.

In Monroe County, a restaurant said thanks with food.

Retired Marine Jamie Myers enjoyed a free meal courtesy of the Pocono Brewing Company in Swiftwater.

"It is really appreciated. I am sure you will see a lot of guys in here today in a few hours taking advantage of it. It's very nice," Myers said.

Pocono Brewing Company opened its doors Veterans Day to any veteran or active-duty military personnel to come and have a free meal.

Executive chef Antonio Santiago helped craft the Veterans Day menu, including everything from brisket to scallops, all free to anyone who has served.

"They are right up the street. They are locals. They are in here all of the time and we decided to give back," said chef Santiago.

This is the first year the Pocono Brewing has hosted a free meal for veterans. The inspiration came from one employee's close connection to the military.

"I have a daughter stationed in Germany, my father was a veteran, and I have many friends that are veterans," said Joellen Tharrington of Pocono Brewing Company. "I said we have to do something for the veterans. No restaurant in the area is acknowledging them. These people need to be acknowledged and recognized. They served our country."

Those who served include U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant Thomas Hayden. He has served two tours of duty in Iraq and was enjoying his free meal.

"It's always nice to have a free meal. Everything tastes better when it is free but I did have a great meal and it's good to come to a place that just wants to give back and thank the veterans for their service," SSgt Hayden said.
