In January of last year, animals were removed from Monroe County's only animal shelter when the Pennsylvania SPCA suddenly shut its doors.
Months later, in November, a group of animal lovers opened the Animal Welfare Society of Monroe or AWSOM. It is the county's first no-kill animal shelter. It is also the county's only shelter and is running out of room after just two months.
"We're taking in so many abandoned animals right now and people who have to give up their animals because they're losing their homes." said Jeannie Lee of AWSOM.
Not only is the shelter beyond full capacity, it also has two wait lists filled with pets people want to surrender. In total, there are 80 dogs and more than 200 cats waiting for a spot at the shelter.
Lee said one woman couldn't wait for a spot to open and did the unthinkable. "She wanted to surrender her dog that day and we couldn't take her in because we're at capacity and she dropped her dog off in the snow." said Lee.
The dog is in the shelter and now needs medical treatment.
Lee said the shelter is asking for the community to adopt.
"They're examples of unconditional love. Pure and simple." said Stephanie Clark, who just adopted a dog.
The AWSOM shelter is also holding a fundraiser at each veterinarian office in Monroe County where animal lovers can donate money.
That money will go toward covering costs for medical attention and other expenses.
