Monroe County Transit Authority is celebrating it's 30th anniversary with a little bit of old and a little bit of new.

A celebration in downtown Stroudsburg Friday night included a very special guest, Martha, one of two new hybrid trolley style buses joining the Pocono Pony fleet.

"This bus is special because it incorporates hybrid technology for electric generation when the bus breaks," said Rich Schlameuss of MCTA.

Pocono Pony officials say the hybrid buses use 30% less diesel fuel costs and help the environment at the same time.

"It reduces emissions of unwanted gases into the atmosphere but the second thing is any savings in fuel is just helpful as the prices increase over the winter time," said Schameuss.

The buses are a miz technology mixed with tradition according the Schameuss. One trolley is named after Martha Kitchen who back in 1979 helped create the Monroe County Transit Authority.

MCTA workers paid a lot of attention to detail to make this bus seems like a real old fashioned trolley including a working bell.

"They incorporate a lot of faux finish for wood trim and things that give it a little bit of a nicer appeal so that when you sit down on the bus you feel like we spent the time thinking about it and thinking about the people that ride the bus and that's important," said Schlameuss.

The hybrid trolley style buses will run in downtown Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg starting this December.
