Light Emitting Diode, or LED, holiday lights have become so popular one local hardware store said it can't keep the new, energy-efficient lights on the shelves.
George Halas and his family decided to go green this holiday season, decorating their home in Stroud Township with LED lights.
"The first time having the LED lights. I like them obviously because of the energy efficiency," said Halas.
According to the Lowe's store in Bartonsville, the Halas' are not alone. All of the shelves that had been stocked with LED lights are empty. Workers said the lights are sold out.
"We can't keep them on the shelf," said Sean Radley, the outdoor power equipment specialist at Lowe's. He added LEDs are popular with consumers because the lights are more energy efficient and safer.
"They are a lot more popular than the incandescent lights. They do a lot more. They will last four times longer than a regular light. They don't burn out. They don't heat up. They save you 80 to 90 percent energy compared to normal lights," Radley explained. "They are actually really convenient because you can get 200 lights on one strand so it's not like you are connecting a whole bunch of lights together. When you factor in the energy efficiency it is a win win."
Back in Stroud Township the Halas' still have up some of their old holiday lights but they said if the LEDs live up to the hype all of their holiday lights will be LED next year.
