Miss Mini, a Huey helicopter on loan from Tobyhanna Army Depot, was dropped off at Mount Airy Casino and Resort Thursday. It's part of the "Salute to America's Veterans" celebration planned at Mount Airy next weekend, November 6 through 8.
"We are going to salute the veterans, specifically a welcome home to the Nietnam vets," said George Toth, President and CEO.
The inspiration came in part Toth's military experience as a 12 year Vietnam era veteran.
"As a vet there are probably a lot of veterans who aren't as lucky as me. It was brought to my attention that we should honor the vets in a specific way and that is what we are doing," said Toth.
The event includes a concert by countrt star Aaron Tippin on Saturday, November 7, along with a War Memorabilia Expo with military equipment from Tobyhanna Army Depot.
"We are proud to share with this event to honor America's vietnam veterans," said John Stochla, Chief of Avionics Divisions at Tobyhanna Army Depot.
Rolling Thunder will also be escorting veterans to the resort for the concert. "It's a nice welcome home for some people who did not get a welcome home," said Rico Nuss, President of Rolling Thunder in Hazleton.
Events throughout the veterans weekend will be collecting donations for veterans charities, such as Toys for Tots, Rolling Thunder and VA Centers.
For veterans who live in Monroe County and need a ride Monroe County Transit Authority is offering free rides to vets door to door next Saturday. Just sign up on MCTA's website before November 4.
