Plywood covered a gaping hole in the front of Mid-Town Sub Shop on Hepburn Street. Bricks and debris were piled on the sidewalk outside. It was the work of a car that smashed into the Williamsport landmark over the weekend.
"It looked like a tractor-trailer had come through that front. It absolutely demolished," said owner Ed Deparasis. He opened Mid-Town back in 1958. He did not know what to expect when he came to see the destruction that was done. "When I saw the extent of the damage it was unbelievable."
The owners said they are glad no one was hurt when the car crashed around 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Faithful customers of the sub shop are wondering when they will get their favorite eatery back.
"They're honest people and I hate to see it happen to them. I've known them for years. I've been coming here for years. It's terrible," said regular customer Kathleen Johnson.
Deparasis and his family spent all day Sunday cleaning the mess.
Customers offered to pitch in and get Mid-Town back to business. Somehow, the front of the shop is all that was seriously damaged and the owners are ready to make a comeback.
"Well I was hoping to hang it up here soon, but we don't want to go out this way," said Deparasis.
Mid-Town's owners think it could be a month before they are able to reopen.
The driver was not seriously hurt and police are investigating the crash in Williamsport.
