The walk to school will soon be a lot nicer for children in Lycoming County. One block of Wylie Street in Jersey Shore is undergoing some big changes.
The path to school is getting a face lift and the project is welcomed by those who walk that block every day.
Construction crews have started tearing up the sidewalks and curbs. Eventually, the uneven slabs of concrete will be replaced with a wider, more level sidewalk.
Jack Nichols watched as workers hammered away at the project that will improve all four corners of an intersection.
"Yeah, anything can make it look shinier. Whatever they do, make it look nice," said Nichols.
Even street lights will be added as part of the PennDOT project to brighten a block that gets its fair share of foot traffic.
"It's a good thing for the kids. It's a wonder there wasn't an accident here before. I think it's a good idea," Nichols added.
Once the curbs and sidewalks are replaced and the lights put up, the plans are to replace a pedestrian bridge so children can take it across the creek on their way to school.
"There's a lot of kids that use it everyday. It would benefit the community," said Robert Stephen. He walked his son, Nicholas, home from school. Stephen said he's heard of children falling and hurting themselves on the way to and from school.
He added he thinks the children will have a better sense of security. "I think they will. I think the community will too. It's a quiet community, and I think it will help out everything, everyone involved," Stephen added.
New curbs, sidewalks and lights are expected to be in place by December. The new bridge should be completed sometime early next year.
