Since his death in 2007, Master Sergeant Sean Thomas has been remembered many different ways and in many different places.
This time, it is in Iraq where a fitness center was recently dedicated in honor of the late Hughesville native.
"Sean's legacy will live on as a testament to the strength and resiliency of all Americans," said General Raymond Odierno last week in Baghdad.
The U.S. Embassy in Iraq is now home to the Master Sergeant Sean Thomas Memorial Gym. Thomas was killed while serving with the Pennsylvania National Guard. His mother said she is thankful her son is not forgotten.
"It is a great honor, I think, and he'd love it because he was quite a competitive person," said Diana Thomas.
The list of places named in honor of Master Sergeant Sean Thomas goes on; a pavilion at the elementary school in Hughesville, a flag and benches at the tennis courts.
Even the post office in downtown Hughesville is dedicated to Sean Thomas' memory. His family hopes Thomas' young daughter will be able to grow up and remember just what her father did for his country.
Now that the gym at the embassy bears his brother's name, Daniel Thomas looks forward to all the men and women serving in Iraq who might come to know his brother, even a little bit. "It doesn't replace having him around but it really does make my family feel good," said Daniel Thomas Jr.
