In Williamsport they are using Veterans Day to kick off a special program to honor veterans and those on active duty.
The Williamsport Hometown Heroes Banner Program will pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces.
By April of 2010 organizers hope to have hundreds of banners hung in the city to recognize area veterans.
Eventually street lights along Via Bella in Williamsport will have banners with pictures of men and women from the area who served.
The folks with Valley Prevention Services are heading up the effort as a fundraiser.
Valley Prevention Services helps young people learn how to deal with addictions to drugs and alcohol.
"We're hoping that it does two things. It gives those families the opportunity to honor their veteran or their service man or woman. It also gives that service member a sense of pride and the community a sense of that pride when they see those banners hung," said organizer Shari Crain.
The Hometown Heroes Banner Program hopes to hang 300 banners and hold a ceremony on Memorial Day.
It will cost $200 per banner to sponsor a banner or honor a loved one who has served this country. Contact Valley Prevention Services for more information at 570-323-9940 or by email.
