The announcement Monday by Sallie Mae is the break many out-of-work people have been looking for.

The news that hundreds of new jobs are being added at the Sallie Mae facility in Hanover Township has people all over celebrating.

At Pennsylvania CareerLink in Wilkes-Barre people said they are happy to have hundreds of new jobs to offer people.

"We're thrilled, we're thrilled because we need these jobs desperately. We're seeing a lot of people who have lost even those type of jobs," said Elaine Stalfa of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Workforce Development.

The new jobs at Sallie Mae in Hanover Township will be funnelled through CareerLink, meaning those who want to work as customer service or claim representatives will go there.

Starting pay for those positions is about nine dollars an hour.

"Definately come here, speak with our counselors. They'll be very well informed to speak with you about the job opportunities that are available," said Jessica Barrouk of PA CareerLink.

It's not just the people who work at CareerLink who are excited by the Sallie Mae news. People looking for work said this is just what they've been hoping for.

"That's pretty cool considering no one around here has a job and everyboy's looking. That's awesome, it's definitely awesome," said Cassandra Bidding of Edwardsville.

"It's hard to find a job in Wilkes-Barre. I've noticed, because I'm not from here. I've only been here a few years and it is hard to find a job here,"s aid Rebecca Evans of Wilkes-Barre. She is looking for a job and added she would be interested in the Sallie Mae positions.

Sallie Mae hopes to hire people for those new jobs over the next 18 months.

In addition to the 600 local jobs, Sallie Mae will be adding 1,400 other jobs elsewhere in the U.S.
