A sailor from Luzerne County is dead, killed this week in the Middle East while serving his country.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian Patton, 37, served as an M.P. in the Navy. His family said he and a friend, Dave Morgan, were in a vehicle when they were hit head on while on patrol in Kuwait.
Patton, of the Nanticoke area, was killed. Morgan, who is from Wilkes-Barre is in critical condition from the crash.
Patton's family said the father and husband was on patrol and killed when his vehicle was hit head on in Kuwait.
"It's scary. I had a nephew who was in an accident two weeks ago and the car was demolished and that's all I could think of. I tend to personalize everything and I could just imagine how his family feels," said Greater Nanticoke Area Schools Superintendent Tony Perrone.
Patton's son, eight-year-old Nicholas, goes to school there. Perrone considers Brian his friend.
"He had a gusto for life. He did it all the way, no half way," Perrone said.
Patton's family got the news of Brian's death Thursday.
"I am just going to miss him terrible and so are a lot of people," said godmother Karen Amesbury. "I guess still shock. I see him sometimes saying things to me, funny things that he used to do and you can't stop thinking about him."
She added Brian was a great husband and father and volunteered to go to the Middle East.
"That was very important to Brian to be in the service, to be very, very close to his friends he's in the service with. They're pretty devastated right now. He was also a guard at Chase Prison," Amesbury added.
Family members said their thoughts and prayers are with Brian's wife, Amy, and their eight-year-old son, Nicholas and an older son who lives in Illinois.
