Dairyland Greyhound Park in Wisconsin is one of several race tracks in America that have closed in the past two weeks after losing money.
What happened there is now affecting animal shelters close to home.
"We've been asked to take as many dogs as we can," said Ann Whitney of Rainbow's End Greyhound Rescue in the Sweet Valley area. They now have about a dozen greyhounds up for adoption. The shelter accepted the dogs from a closed Rhode Island race track.
One of dogs that needs a good home is three-and-a-half year old Luney.
"He sleeps a lot. Very loving. He'd be great with anyone who already has a pack of dogs. He's not an attention hog. He hangs out with everybody," greyhound foster parent Denise Castellano of Luney.
Adopting a neutered greyhound with all of its shots comes with a price tag of about $295 but shelter volunteers said ultimately you will end up saving a life like Luney's.
If you can't take a dog home there are a variety of other ways you can still help. Volunteers said they could always use food and financial donations.
