A new store opened its doors Thursday in Luzerne County, despite the recession, and it's meant to help people get through these tough times.

It's a new Goodwill store and it opened in Edwardsville. The place sells gently-used clothing and furniture at reduced cost and people are thrilled it is in town.

"Been waiting for it to open up just to see what's here, what the prices are," said Ronald Youngblood of Courtdale.

Customers combed the racks looking for deals on donated clothing, furniture, toys and other items.

"It's very important, the way today's economy is you know. I came to buy stuff for my grandson, so it helps out," said Cindy Ide of Plymouth.

"It's nice that Goodwill is here and is in the area and you know, it's nice to see it built up," said Lila Youngblood of Courtdale.

Goodwill is a non-profit organization that helps people with disabilities and other special needs.

"We are in a recession, let's call it what it is, and I am hoping we're getting out of it and we're hearing that this is a time when a store like Goodwill Industries can thrive," said Mary Rinaldi, Goodwill board chairman.

The folks at Goodwill said the success of their stores really depends on how much people are willing to donate. There is quite a lot in the store.

"The amount of donations that we received here has been tremendous. Actually, I have a van coming in tomorrow to take some away to store them so we have some space," said Goodwill Industries Vice President Ren Major.

The Edwardsville store is the third to open in our area. There is one in Hazleton and one in Bloomsburg.

Goodwill officials said they are thinking of opening another, either in the Poconos or Scranton.
