A retired Wilkes-Barre police detective pleaded guilty Thursday to a corruption charge and now faces years in federal prison. It's the latest in the ongoing federal corruption probe in Luzerne County.

For years, William Maguire was a Wilkes-Barre police detective captain and then a member of the Luzerne County housing authority. On Thursday he faced a judge and admitted to a federal corruption charge.

Maguire left the federal courthouse in Wilkes-Barre after admitting he took $1,400 in cash, money he told investigators he never should have pocketed.

Maguire was a member of the Luzerne County Housing Authority when it happened.

According to federal officials, he asked for and took cash from a person who received several contracts with the housing authority. The feds say fellow housing authority member Gerry Bonner delivered the cash to Maguire who used it on a trip to Florida.

Bonner has since pleaded not guilty to the corruption charge he is facing.

When sentenced, Maguire faces up to 10 years behind bars and a $250,000 fine.

The sentencing date has been set for January 25, 2010.
