Former judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan will be immune for the things they did on the bench, according to a ruling announced late Friday afternoon in Luzerne County.

In the ruling a federal judge said Mark Ciavrella and Michael Conahan can't be held responsible for the things they did as judges.

Both men are facing a slew of criminal corruption charges and civil suits.

Ciavarella is accused of unfairly sending some juveniles to private detention centers for kickback money.

Judge Richard Caputo said in his ruling Friday that while his opinion may be unpopular, he believes Conahan and Ciavarella cannot be held responsible in civil cases for the things they did as judges.

It's called judicial immunity.

This does not mean those civil cases against the former judges go away. It simply means, in Caputo's opinion, they cannot be sued for the things they did from the bench.
