Lent Means Busy Pizza Shops
It's the first Friday of Lent, and the dough is flying at A Little Pizza Heaven on Boulevard Avenue in Scranton.

"Nobody eats meat on Fridays. Today, very popular was our Margherita Pizza. Fresh mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, and bazil. Sold a lot of those today," said owner Darryl Bartlett. He added on Fridays during Lent pizza sales go up by 50 percent. "A lot of planning, got everything ready, everybody here's psyched up for it. We're ready."

Their boost in business comes from an ancient tradition of fasting and abstinence during the 40 days before Easter, known as Lent, which includes not eating meat on Fridays for many.

We found a few good Catholics from the Oblates of Saint Joseph Rectory, about to sit down for a Lenten lunch. , "It's just a penance, a sacrifice, for your beliefs. Ash Wednesday and then Fridays, during Lent," Seminarian Jim Smurl explained.

Outside of Lou's Pizza in Olyphant, Catholic Donna Guman, was picking up lunch for herself and some of her co-workers. "Some are, some aren't. They're not all Catholic, but I don't eat meat on Fridays, and I try not to on Wednesdays also."

If pizza isn't your thing, Bartlett said pretty much any item on the menu can be made without meat, in case your lenten meals need some variety.
