This Memorial Day had veterans from Lackawanna County alongside Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as they gathered to keep the true meaning of the solemn holiday alive.
At the Covington Township Police Department near Daleville veterans stood alongside scouts at a community service to honor the men and women who have served in the armed forces.
Angelina Tenore and her twin sister are from Moscow. They read poems about soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
"I have three cousins that are in the war. They're really doing good and I'm really proud of them," said Angelina Tenore.
"We're a very patriotic, my family, very patriotic! The holidays are about barbecues, picnics, days off of school but we've always taught them that that's it about America, about freedom and about soldiers who've died to make us free," said Debbie Tenore.
Veterans from the VFW post in Daleville were glad to see all generations involved in the solemn ceremonies.
"Especially the young kids, the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts, it shows the younger generations are going to maintain the tradition for Memorial Day," said Joe Zurcher of VFW Post 5207.
Members from the VFW urged everyone to attend at least one Memorial Day service to pay tribute to the thousands of men and women who have served.
"We place 2,200 flags on seven local cemeteries. It's really sad when you're placing the flags, I mean there's so many veterans that have died for the country just in this area. It's really sad that's what gets us all the most," Zurcher added.
The celebration in Covington Township was one of three sponsored by the VFW post in Daleville.
