Preparing for the Celebrations
Gearing up for a fourth of July celebration for many means a last-minute trip to the grocery store.

A big party means a big bill. Cheryl Atkinson just arrived from California. She shelled out hundreds of dollars Friday morning to feed her family this holiday weekend at Newton Lake.

"Steaks. Salad. Fresh produce. Lots of cheese crackers. A little bit of everything," Atkinson said.

While others don't have as many to feed they're still trying to conserve cash by making more snacks at home in what many still consider a shaky economy.

"It breaks my heart when you have to go out and pay eight dollars for a hamburger when you can buy a couple of pounds of meat for eight dollars and make it on your own grill," said Greg Barkowski of Jessup.

It's not just food people are shopping for but also a Fourth of July fixture; fireworks.

People were browsing a Keystone Fireworks tent along Oak Street in Scranton Friday morning.

Workers there said they will be staying open until 10 p.m. this weekend to accomodate all of those fireworks fanatics.

"We figure today is going to be our biggest rush considering it's the third. People are going to be last-minute shopping," said Keefe Quinn of Keystone Fireworks.

With the Fourth comes community events like the new one that's planned at Peckville Assembly of God on Sunday. Live music and a with a dramatic musical is just a taste of what you'll find at the free event. It's all being held to keep a Lackawanna County tradition alive.

"For about 17 years Blakely borough has been so gracious to put an amazing fireworks show on and this year we're going to do it right here," said Pastor Terry Drost.
