Two people trying to steal meat from a grocery store in Old Forge were caught on camera. One grocer said that kind of crime is happening all too often.

The owner of Rossi's Shur Save Market in Old Forge said in the last five days there have been two separate incidents involving men who tried to make off with meat.

The video shows two men walk into Rossi's Shur Save Market Tuesday night. They headed to the meat department and loaded their basket with steaks.

One man dropped the basket at the front door while the other tried to leave the store with it but couldn't get out the in door.

Security stepped in but the man took off without the meat.

"They're going after the big items. They had, we rang it through the registers, about $198 worth of steaks," said Larry Rossi.

He added shoplifters like those caught on camera hit the market several times a week and those are just the incidents that they know of, the crimes that are caught on tape.

"It just can't go on the way it is because you get robbed three times a week, what does that do? And I'm just afraid someday it's going to be even worse than that," said Rossi.

The grocer added the thieves aren't just hitting inside the store, but outside as well. Someone even damaged the soda machine and took all the cash.

There seems to be a trend at Rossi's. The owner said meat thieves are all too common.

On Friday, two other men were caught on camera walking out of the store with with a hidden tenderloin of filet mignon worth about $60.

"Blatantly walked up to the meat case, grabbed them and walked out the door. My security guy was in back of them and they yelled back that they weren't paying for this," recounted Rossi.

He said all the thefts also affect other customers.

"It makes everyone else pay too because insurances and the price of groceries goes up. I have to have security and it's just getting worse," said Rossi.

He added he wants to see harsher penalties for shoplifting. He said if the thieves are caught he will press charges.

Old Forge police are investigating. Anyone with information about the meat thefts is asked to call 911.
