It's called Make a Difference Day and it's designed to help an organization that says its feeding more people in need than ever before.
From blowing up balloons to making sure the grills are good to go, St. Peter's Lutheran Church Hall in Scranton has been a busy place.
Volunteers are gearing up for a nationwide event called Make a Difference Day.
"What you need to do to make a difference is find a need in your community and do whatever you have to do to help someone," explained Jeanmarie Warpus of St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
The church group is filling a need by cooking up a big breakfast to raise money for St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen in Scranton. The organization runs mainly on donations and feeds people in need. Those who help out said when the economy went downhill the ammount of clients at the kitchen went up. The non-profit went from serving about 1,500 meals a week to 2,000 and many of those lining up for the free meals are families.
"You'd be amazed at how many children we have that we're serving every day," said Dr. Joe Kelly of St. Francis of Assissi Kitchen.
That's why organizers of the pancake and sausage breakfast at the church in Scranton's hill section are hoping to raise some cash so no child goes hungry.
The people who will be doing a lot of the work during the event aren't just church goers but also students from area colleges.
"A lot of the clubs, we try to do at least three things a semester to get out there and help to do what we can. There's a lot of us and a lot of help that needs to be put out there," said University of Scranton junior Krystina Kobylinski.
