A new IMAX movie theater could soon be coming to one part of Lackawanna County.

Now a community is gearing up for some shows on the really big screen.

An IMAX theater is essentially the same thing as a regular movie theater except the screen is much, much larger. So large in fact, that the screen wraps around, giving the spectator a full, 180 degree view of the motion picture.

If all goes as planned, an IMAX theater could be up and running in Dickson City in time for next summer. The proposed movie-plex featuring 14 screens and 2,600 seats would be one of the largest movie theaters in the area. Developers are looking at property off Commerce Boulevard next to Kohl's Department Store.

At a time when many businesses are closing doors, those who live and work in Lackawanna County are glad to see some development.

"I think that Scranton could us some updating, for sure," said Helen Newcomer of Newfoundland.

"With the economy the way that it is, any new business coming to town is a good thing. New jobs, more business. I think it's a plus for sure," said Justin Newcomer.

Police officers in Dickson City are excited about the idea of the theater, though they do admit they are concerned about the traffic.

"I think that at first you're going to see a lot of traffic and then the newness would wear off but it's going to be a big increase on Commerce Boulevard," said Dickson City Police Chief William Bilinski.

At least one business in that part of Dickson City said the more traffic, the better.

"I think it's going to be great for us. Movie theaters are always fantastic. Movies and dinner. They just go together," said Karen Duncan of Quaker Steak and Lube.

The Dickson City planning commission will meet next week to discuss the proposed IMAX theater then pass any recommendations to the Dickson City council.

If everything is approved, the new cinema will be the second largest in the area behind Cinemark in Moosic, which boasts 5,000 seats.

The proposed theater would be the only within 100 miles to have that massive IMAX screen.

"It sounds interesting. I'm not a cinema person. He's always trying to get me to go to them but I think it sounds really good," Helen Newcomer added.

A group called Alliance Entertainment is heading up the project. They said the total cost to bring the theater to Lackawanna County could reach $13 million.
