The Memorial Day Parade in Taylor brought out patriots of all ages. It honors men and women who have served our country.

"Well my father was a veteran and I think it's a wonderful thing that the community does," said Linda Petrunich. She watches the parade every year right across the street from the Jacob Davis Funeral Home.

There nearly a dozen American flags fly, very special flags that belong to the families of local veterans who have died.

"They gave their lives for our freedom and it's just a small way of honoring them here at the home," said Robert Thomas of Jacon Davis Funeral Home.

He and his father started the Memorial Day observance at their funeral home about ten years ago, proudly flying the flags and displaying them with a name tag that lists the veteran's branch of service.

People who have lined the parade route for years said one of the highlights is seeing the flags.

"It's like when they play the Star Spangled Banner. It just grabs you, you have to get tears in your eyes and feel very proud for our country," said Helen Cherra of Taylor.

Those who look forward to seeing the flags are glad they're not on display year round.

"I think if they were out every day, people would just ignore them, not think anything of it. When they do if for that special day, I think it does mean more," Petrunich added.

"We have families who come here year after year to visit the flags. Whether they're from Moosic or Raylor, they come here and they say, 'I'm glad to see dad's flag flying' or 'Mom would be proud,'" Thomas said.

Family members of veterans are the ones who make the choice and give permission to fly their loved ones' flag in Taylor on Memorial Day.
