For some it means a vacation but for others it means big business, especially for a Northumberland butcher.
Jeffrey Mertz was getting meat ready Friday for the holiday rush. "Business owners in the business I'm in look forward to the holidays. Even though I can't have off, it gives us the opportunity to pay our bills," Mertz said. He owns Mertz Meats, near Northumberland.
He said the big sellers are hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, steaks and pork chops. He expects to sell thousands of pounds of meat just this week alone.
"It increases the business. People will splurge a little more over the holidays. They'd buy stuff they wouldn't normally buy during the week," Mertz added.
The butcher said he has about 250 pounds of smoked bologna and he expects it to be sold out by the Fourth.
Norm Greth said he's not traveling on this holiday in order to save, but he will spend big on meat. "We're just going to get some good things to eat and stay home," Greth said.
Joe Young said he likes shopping locally because of the deals. "It's just cheaper than the grocery store and the cut of meat is better quality, I feel, for the price," said Young.
Mertz said though times are tough, holidays like these give him the boost he needs.
