The calendar reads mid-October but the weather feels like early winter as the first snow of the season falls in parts of the area.

Parts of Monroe County are seeing some significant snow from the storm.

This is the time of year when foll foliage usually makes the headlines. Thursday it was the first snow.

The Poconos' bright autumn colors were covered in white as the first snow of the season hit Monroe County. The snow started coming down about 11 a.m.

At Tobyhanna State Park, a popular spot for fall foliage fans all that could be seen were snow flakes.

At the five points intersection in Mount Pocono drivers were battling the mid-October snow. Some welcomed the first snow fall, like Margie Bell who works for the Pennsylvania Ski Area Association. "This is just great because it gets people psyched. It gets them into the area. They want to buy their snow passes, get the economy going," Bell said.

Others said the snow canceled their plans.

"I was supposed to golf this morning. We were going to golf at 8:30 a.m. and that got wiped out," said Richard Farley of Tobyhanna.

Some were hoping to get out of town before the first snow fall hit.

"I go to Florida. I don't like the snow. Well I don't mind the snow. I don't like the cold," said Neil McNett of Mount Pocono. "It's a little early to go to Florida."

With the fall foliage season only half way through and Halloween just weeks away, many said this could be the start of a long winter season.

With this first snow of the season PennDOT is warning drivers to be a little more cautious on the roadways.

In Muncy Creek Township people had to deal with gusts of cold air mixed with rain. Temperatures were above freezing when wet snow sprinkled parts of Montoursville.

Drivers in Loyalsock Township drivers had to deal with a mix of rain and snow.

PennDOT in central counties said all of the roads were treated with salt in case of wintry weather. In parts of Union and Snyder counties snow plows were on the road to clean up the snow.

Our Stormtracker 16 team reports the earliest it ever snowed in was October 3, 1974 when two-tenths of an inch fell at the Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport.

The snowfall of October brings back memories for a lot of people from October 28 of last year when there was 17 inches of snow on the ground.
