"I had it in the back of my mind that this was possible, but I didn't think it would transpire like this," said David Nuss of Mifflin Township.
What started off as a show of support for fellow co-workers ended up landing Ed Devlin III in trouble with the South Centre Township Police Department.
A benefit held in September at Arnold's Golf Course in Columbia County raised nearly $5,000 for Nuss and Harry Hartzel of Berwick.
Both are fighting brain tumors.
Nuss said the money promised from the benefit never came.
"We could have used the money at the time honestly. We were debating over whether to buy bread or butter at the time," Nuss added.
He lost his vision during a brain tumor operation. He said he was supposed receive half the money raised, but after about a month of unanswered calls to Devlin, the police stepped in.
It was then Devlin turned himself in to authorities.
"I feel bad for the people that did all the work, donated the money. I mean it's a shame they had to go through all of that," said Nuss.
Dozens of people attended the benefit, which included t-shirt sales and a raffle.
Nuss was overcome with emotion talking about the experience. "It's hard to explain the feeling, but when somebody helps you, I'm sorry," Nuss said tearfully.
Right now Devlin is a free man. A hearing on those charges will be scheduled soon in Columbia County.
