Police in Columbia County said it was a busy holiday weekend for vandals.

More than 50 tombstones were found toppled over the weekend at a cemetery in Centralia.

Rows upon rows of toppled and cracked tombstones are what's left after vandals trashed the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Centralia.

"We grew up here. I don't know how many times I've been up in this cemetery. That's just a shame," said Thomas Schronic of Shenandoah.

State police said the vandalism happened sometime over the weekend. More than 50 tombstones were damaged.

Anne Benfield came to check on her family's tombstones. She found a family headstone for two generations on the ground. "They think they got away from it but God knows who they are and what goes around comes around," Benfield said.

Some of these tombstones are more than a hundred years old and are now destroyed.

Even Aimee Frank of New Jersey stopped by in her travels to see the damage. "It makes me really sad that people don't have any respect for people who have passed on, who founded this town. I mean just respect for other people's families," Frank said.

Most of the residents of Centralia were forced to move out of town in the 1980s and 1990s because of an underground mine fire.

Police aren't sure who is responsible for the recent vandalism there.
