The federal government says those on Social Security will not be receiving cost of living increases next year and that has some people crying foul.
A senior fair held in Jim Thorpe Thursday was a one-stop spot for senior citizens to get all kinds of information. It was sponsored by state House speaker Keith McCall.
One of the issues on the minds of Social Security recipients is the government announcement there will not be a cost of living increase in their checks next year because inflation is almost non existent. Most of those who were asked said this is another sign that the feds don't know what it's like in the real world.
"Everything is going up. The insurances are going up, gas bills, the light bills. We should have an increase. We should have an increase," said Eleanor Yeakel of Jim Thorpe.
"I paid all these years into Social Security and they're going to take it away from me. I think thats outrageous!" said Stephena Kurtz of Palmerton.
"They gave all these congressmen, they all get raises. We got nothing!" said Joe Schneeberger of Jim Thorpe.
Although Social Security recipients will not get a cost of living increase, President Obama is asking Congress for a one shot check of $250 for seniors.
"I think at least there is something coming your way, you know. The way the economy is I think it's good to have the $250," said Tom Zuber of Nesquehoning.
Some others think differently.
"I will take it but I'd rather have the COLA (cost of living adjustment)," said Pat Valentini of Lansford. "Once I get this $250 it's spent and done."
"We can't see into the future how much inflation will affect us and it might be a lot more than $250," said John Dedinsky of Jim Thorpe.
Congress must approve the plan before the seniors see that $250 check next year.
