Hours after the fire started, the rubble was still smoldering.
Flames wrecked four condominiums at Split Rock Resort near Lake Harmony. The homes were empty while being remodeled.
"Had there been occupants in there that would have added to the mix but fortunately it was unoccupied at the time," said Lake Harmony Fire Chief Ralph Lennon.
The damage is so bad that officials may never know the cause.
"Given the high degree of damage, collapse of that unit, it is difficult to determine conclusively what was responsible for this fire," said state police fire marshal Dave Klitsch.
"The building as it is, there was fire in three of the four units. I suspect the building is going to be torn down completely," said Chuck Dickinson of Split Rock.
The homes are insured but that doesn't make the loss any easier to take.
It's warm for this time of year and firefighters said the mild temperature made it easier to battle the blaze.
"Even through there is snow on the ground it's warm, so the lines weren't freezing. We had to dig one of the hydrants, up here were frozen, some minor issues when we had water it was there," said Craig Hartley of the Kidder Township Fire Department.
Others said the warmer weather is a double edge sword.
"With the temperatures being above freezing it was nice but, once the temperatures get warmer your body gets warmer. It makes it a little harder for the initial fire attack," said Kidder Township Assistant Chief Chris Madigan.
The condos will be rebuilt but it is not known when.
